The Boys & Girls Clubs of Mason Valley has changed the lives
of young people in our area for more than 10 years. We are very proud
of that legacy, and want to reach even more children and communities
in the years ahead.
Today our 7 Club locations annually serve 1,065 youth in some
of our area’s most disadvantaged communities. The Clubs give
our kids a safe, supervised and affordable place to go every day
after school, with caring adult staff, character-building educational
and recreational programs, and an opportunity to set and achieve
goals, while also making friends and having fun.
The Boys & Girls Clubs of Mason Valley has actively sought
to enrich the lives of girls and boys whom other youth agencies
have had difficulty in reaching. We are dedicated to ensuring that
our community’s youngsters have greater access to quality
programs and services that will enhance their lives and shape their
futures.
In a world that has never seemed more threatening and devoid of
promise for a disproportionate number of America’s children,
the Boys & Girls Clubs of Mason Valley provides a tangible measure
of hope. The Club offers young people what they need and want most:
adults who respect and listen to them; a safe environment where
they can have fun and be themselves; and interesting, constructive
activities that channel youthful energy into challenging pursuits.
A youth development strategy underlies all Boys & Girls Club
programs and fosters a sense of belonging, competence, usefulness
and influence that builds self-confidence and self-esteem.
The Boys & Girls Clubs of Mason Valley is part of a nationwide
affiliation of local, autonomous organizations and Boys
& Girls Clubs of America working to help youth of all backgrounds
develop the qualities needed to become responsible citizens and
leaders. It is facility-based, employs 40 part-time employees, 8
full-time employees and offers daily access to a broad range of
programs in five core program areas: 1) character and leadership
development, 2) education and career development, 3) health and
life skills, 4) the arts, and 5) sports, fitness and recreation.
Since our inception, 2,800 boys and girls at risk and in need
have taken advantage of the programs, activities and services provided
by the Boys & Girls Clubs of Mason Valley. They benefit from
trained, caring professional staff and volunteers who help young
people take control of their lives, envision productive futures,
and reach their goals.
We are in consequential times. Many families are feeling the effect
of a turbulent economy; some parents may have lost their jobs while
others are working two jobs to make ends meet. In tough times like
these, the immediate value of a Boys & Girls Club is more apparent.
Many Clubs nationwide are seeing a greater demand for their programs
and services. The Boys & Girls Clubs of Mason Valley is one
such Club, we are responding and meeting the needs of our community,
our seniors, our families and most of all our young people every
day with many different programs.
We provide over 200 meals daily in our Rafter 7 Ranch Kitchen
along with our outlying Club sites. This was a direct result of
meeting the needs of our community and with the assistance from
the State of Nevada Dept. Education’s Health and Nutrition
team. This past year we served 37,666 meals which is the sixth straight
year of an increase., The Club’s Rafter 7 Ranch kitchen continues
to play a vital role in our community and along with the Walker
River Basin Communities Foundation Gymnasium provides a community
center type facility that is utilized by countless other non-profits,
community based organizations, service clubs and private entities
all year long!
The Club
The Club Teen center is a true blessing to our organization and
our teens who now have a place to call their own and also allows
the main unit to focus on 12 and under programming. The Club would
like to thank the Reviglio family for their amazing generosity of
this facility.
Silver Springs
The Boys & Girls Clubs of Mason Valley’s Silver Spring’s
unit officially chartered in 2009 in collaboration with the Lyon
County School District. This Unit is located at the Silver Stage
Middle School and serves 40-50 kids daily. Today there are 192 youth
enrolled at this unit and participate in our Power Hour homework
assistance and tutoring program, Fine Arts, athletics, and of course
daily snacks.
Dayton
In June 2010, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Mason Valley officially
opened our 4th site in Dayton, NV. This site is located at the Dayton
Elementary School. In August of 2010, The Boys & Girls Clubs
of Mason Valley opened our 5th, 6th and 7th sites at Dayton Intermediate
School, Sutro Elementary School and Riverview Elementary School.
Our new members benefit from a before and after school program.
Our enrollment numbers continue to grow and we are so thankful for
the involvement and excitement from the Dayton community.
Food Bank Operation
The Club continues to operate the Food Bank for all of Mason and
Smith Valleys every 2nd Wednesday of the month in the Club’s
Walker River Basin Communities Foundation gymnasium. This past year
we were able to increase our amount of food to the needy by various
new partners. In addition to our partnership with the Food Bank
of Northern Nevada and Lyon County Health and Human Services we
have secured other local partners. Several local merchants such
as Scolari’s, Post Offices, Yerington Library and others have
stepped up by having barrels in their establishments year-round.
Over the years, Yerington
Soroptimists Club, Yerington Rotary Club and Yerington
Lions Club have also made generous contributions to this very
worthwhile and needed service.
We have also improved our delivery of food by recruiting more
volunteers in addition to our teens from “The Club”
teen center who organize the distribution area each month. These
teens stock all the shelves and assist the families, mostly seniors,
with their groceries back to their cars.
Currently we serve between 130-150 families each month, mostly
seniors!
The Boys & Girls Club Take One Movie Theater
The Boys & Girls Clubs of Mason Valley’s Movie
Theater had another great year serving the community. The Theater
received a tremendous amount of support from the Walker River Basin
Communities Foundation and Atlantic Richfield Corporation to purchase
a state of the art digital Movie Marquee. The tremendous amount
of support we receive from the Masini Family and staff is deeply
appreciated and we look forward to another great year of family
entertainment.
In addition to the much needed revenue generated from the Theater,
on some Friday’s all youth attending the Club are walked over
and get to enjoy the theater at a very low cost and in many cases
free. Every month a percentage of the revenue goes directly to our
Teen Center for their continued efforts assisting the evening shows
and weekend matinees.
The Attic Thrift Store
The Attic Thrift Store this past year
provided families with goods and services at a very low cost, in
some cases free. The Attic continues to provide a much needed service
to all low-income families and seniors who simply can’t afford
the basics of clothes, household goods, furniture, etc. The Attic
has quickly become a staple of quality and service to our community
while helping folks get through these trying times with basic essentials.
100% of all the proceeds go directly to the Boys & Girls Clubs
of Mason Valley.
